Burundi: Econet upgrades money transfer service

Mobile operator Econet wireless, has launched a money wire transfer service, Ecocash, that will make it possible to transfer money between the different telephone networks in Burundi.
“We are continuing to fulfill the promise we made at our launch in March last year. We are unveiling another first,” said Econet’s MD, Mr. Darlington Mandivenga.
Outlining the advantages of this upgrade, the Brand manager for Ecocash, Mr. Yannick Mugisha, said the system would aid many people in moving their money safely within the country and would also have the advantage of paying for bills in several participating hotels, restaurants, schools and utility bills like electricity and water.
Business Week reports that Econet has teamed up with the National Post office system to provide over 88 nationwide outlets for it’s Ecocash services.
Econet Wireless so far boasts of over 300,000 clients. The current leader is Ucom, followed by Econet. The others are Africel, Onamob and Smart.
Since it’s launch as a money transfer service last year, Ecocash with an initial capital injection of US $1 million, so far boasts of over 8,000 subscribers.
