Project Fame Season 3 winner, Chidinma Ekile speaks on the joy of winning #234Next

History was made on 25 September, 2010, when 22-year-old Chidinma Ekile emerged the first female winner of the television reality musical talent hunt show, MTN Project Fame West Africa. The Imo State native was dubbed the surprise act of the competition as a result of her superlative performances week after week. X2 had a chat with the petite singer at a recent event in Lagos.

What was the feeling like for you when you were announced winner?

When I saw the crowd I was like ‘is this real?’ I’ve been dreaming of a day like this.

When we were three left, I was like ‘God I hope I win this’. I also pictured myself in a situation of what if I don’t win? To God be the glory I won.

Were you encouraged to enter for the competition?

A friend of mine told me about Project Fame and brought the form to my house and I filled it in faith. I was like ‘I will just go there and do my best’. It wasn’t easy; we had to go through series of auditions after facing the judges, there were still yet another set of judges we did not see. It was just favour.

What do you think was your strength in the house?

It has always been my voice and I just used it the best I could.

Did you have any low moments in the house for you?

At the start when I was given songs that were not my kind, the low pitched songs, I was scared and thought I won’t go far.

So what songs shot you up?

I think it was just God. The one song that shot me up was during our reggae week, ‘Weeping and Wailing’ by Mighty Diamonds. God is my confidence I never do anything by my power before I get on stage I learn my song and pray to God to help me.

During the competition you mentioned that your father was not in support of your career choice?

He felt music is not something that will pay the bills but he is supportive now. I was shocked when I saw him come to watch me; it wasn’t easy. My father is a very strict man so there was really no time for nonsense whatever he says is what you do.

Who was Chidinma before Project Fame?

Chidinma was just a church girl. I was a member of the choir at Four Square Ikosi, Ketu and when my parents moved to Ikorudu I joined the Four Square Choir there. I sing at church functions and in church.

When did you realize you could sing?

My mum said I started singing at age 6. I remember the adult choir came to pick me from children’s and a lot of people raised eyebrows but I guess my choir master knew what he saw before he brought me in.

What is your educational background?

I was about writing my Post UME exams before project fame came. I thought ‘here is Project Fame, let me just try it before I go to school’. So I did and it worked out.

Did you have a thing for Kesse?

I know you will go there (laughs). For the song, you know there was a time in the competition when I did not have a face, there was no Chidinma. When I came out everyone was like Chidinma, Chidinma and so he was like ‘why is everyone in the house just talking about Chidima’? So he wrote a song and everyone in the house had a verse. It was just a song that we were playing with in the academy but when we were asked to choose a song to perform he (Kesse) felt it was a song everyone will like.

Who were your biggest threats in the house?

Yetunde, because of her stage presence; there is this thing about her, when she gets on stage everyone just loves her. Rhoda also had a very loud voice. I think Ochuko and Kesse as well were also threats.

How do you intend to handle this sudden fame?

I will leave everything to God because I can’t do anything without him. So I’ll just ask him to direct me on what to do

Who are your favourite artistes?

Banky W and Waje, she is a very fantastic singer. I also love Celine Dion and Whitney Houston too.

Tell me about your single, ‘Illusion’.

It was deep. I wrote it at a time when I was going through a lot. I began writing it at home but with the tutorials in the house, I got to finish it. I have written quite a lot of songs.

What is your style of music?

I will be doing inspirational and a little bit of hip hop

At this supposed peak of your career, God is all you need to sustain you. Keep your eyes focussed on Him and constantly seek for His guidance to maintain a balanced life. Give your life in totality to Him if you haven't done so, and He shall always direct you on a good path of life. CONGRATULATIONS!
