Mr. Fola Adeola’s selection as Mallam Nuhu Ribadu’s running mate
This past weekend, news broke in the Nigerian press about Mr. Fola Adeola’s selection as Mallam Nuhu Ribadu’s running mate. His selection came after many failed picks by the ACN camp ranging from unknown American-based education consultant, Dr. Sunny Ugochukwu to former Anambra State Governor, Dr. Chris Ngige.
Mr. Fola Adeola, a banker and entrepreneur is well known in the Nigerian private sector circuit as co-founder of one of Nigeria’s leading banks, Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) Plc and as Founder and Chairman of FATE Foundation, a charitable organisation that promotes entrepreneurship among Nigerian youths. Prior to his selection, he was also a promoter of grassroot political party, Kowa.
Born in January 1954, Mr Adeola attended Yaba College of Technology, where he obtained his Higher National Diploma in Accountancy. He subsequently obtained degrees from the London School of Accountancy, the International Institute for Management Development (IEP), the Lagos Business School (CEP) and the Harvard Business School (OPM). He served as a manager of the NAL Merchant Bank Plc from 1982-1986. Prior to this, he was a senior auditor at D.O. Dafinone & Co. Mr Adeola was Deputy General Manager & Divisional Head, Financial Services Division of the Continental Merchant Bank Limited from 1986-1990. In 1999, Mr Adeola was awarded membership of the National Institute of Policy & Strategic Studies (MNI). He is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and was once a Council member of the Institute. He is also a member of the Institute of Directors of Nigeria.

Many have called Mallam Nuhu Ribadu’s selection of Mr. Adeola as his running mate “a master stroke” while many others have called it “bone headed,” among others. For those in the yes camp, Fola Adeola’s selection represents the best of both worlds for the ACN ticket. To them, while Mallam Ribadu the anti corruption crusader works to sanitize the polity, Mr. Adeola can work his master entrepreneurial stroke on the economy. However, those in the nay camp point out that Mr. Adeola’s Muslim background will put a Muslim overload on the ACN ticket and will do little to win Mallam Ribadu votes in the South East thus limiting the ACN’s chance of winning in the April polls.
