Jim O’Neill (the Goldman Sachs executive who came up with the term BRICs in a 2001 paper titled “The World Needs Better Economic BRICs”) contested South Africa’s recent inclusion in the BRICs on CNN arguing that in the context of the continent, “Nigeria is the place that really matters.” He advises South Africa to be more focused on getting the basics right rather than joining economic blocs.
