Nigeria’s top internet entrepreneurs

Who are the top internet entrepreneurs in Nigeria? These are the sort of questions we will be answering in our on-going internet and blogging series on CP-Africa. This weekend, we published a list of the top blogs in Nigeria. You can read the full list here.

We have picked the top entrepreneurs in Nigeria by focusing on Nigerians who have launched the most popular Nigerian websites online. We have chosen not to include newspapers on the list with the exception of Sahara Reporters whose founder we think qualifies as an internet entrepreneur.

Here is a list of Nigeria’s top  internet entrepreneurs. Please note that we identified them based on how popular their websites rank on Alexa.com. Though these ranks may shift from time to time, in general, the sites that rank well remain fairly stable.

How Alexa measures a website’s popularity

The rank by country is calculated using a combination of average daily visitors  and pageviews from users from that country.

Nigeria’s top internet entrepreneurs

1. Seun Osewa (Founder, Nairaland.com)

Seun Osewa founded Nairaland.com in March, 2005 and has since grown it to become the most popular website in Nigeria run by a Nigerian. At Nigeria’s 8th most visited website (as at the time of this post), Nairaland is visited more often than Twitter and Windows Live and is just below Wikipedia which currently ranks as number 7. The website currently has about 650,000 user accounts and he is the sole employee of the site. You can read all about his Nairaland story on CP-Africa here. Seun also runs Nairalist.com, a Nigerian classified ads site.

2. Prince Nwabeke (Founder, Nigerian Best Forum)

Prince Nwabeke’s part forum, part social networking site, Nigerian Best Forum is currently ranked number 19 in Nigeria. His forum/social network is more popular than Microsoft’s Bing and WordPress in Nigeria. To learn more about him, you can check out his profile on Nigerian Best Forum here.

3. Dvt and Dguy (Nicknames)  (Co-Founders, Naija Hot Jobs)

Dvt and Dguy (nicknames) are the co-owners of Naija Hot Jobs, a Nigerian jobs and career community. Naijahotjobs currently ranks number 34 in Nigeria and is currently more popular than Aol.com and About.com. The two brothers also own Naijapals.com.

Author’s note/Update, May 27th, 2011: The site’s founders would like to maintain anonymity hence our decision to use their nicknames

4. Omoyele Sowore (Founder, SaharaReporters.com)

Omoyele Sowore is the founder of Sahara Reporters, Nigeria’s leading citizen journalism site. The site currently ranks number 38 in Nigeria. Sowore previously worked with Jonathan Elendu of Elendu Reports before starting Sahara Reporters. To learn more about Sowore and his founder story watch this video here. Also read more about Sahara Reporters recent funding news here.

5. Joy Uko (Founder, NigeriaGalleria.com)

Joy Uko is Founder of NigeriaGalleria.com, a Nigerian information portal. The portal is made up of a business directory and features jobs, forums and many more offerings. It currently ranks number 46 in Nigeria.

Please note again that these are based strictly on Alexa rankings as of today, Tuesday May 24, 2011 and not our subjective opinion.

Honorable mention: Jason Njoku of Nollywood Love. Though his You Tube channel is still rising in popularity and may not match the sites above in traffic numbers, we admire his innovative approach of digitizing Nigeria’s movie industry through content deals with Alaba producers.

I came across this site, http://seemeseewahala.com and can predict it will unseat Nairaland someday, even soon if the founder works hard enough

    Fuel Subsidy Removal Impact Survey

Even the tomato seller said “Na fuel, no be me“. That was in January. We’re now in April.

How has the Fuel Subsidy affected you? …

Just months ago, hundreds of thousands of Nigerians across different states marched in protest against the Federal Government’s removal of fuel subsidy which escalated the price from N65 to N140. That was at least a whopping 115 percent increase – bad, bad news for the average Nigerian worker.

The Federal Government has since reduced the price from N140 to N97. Subsequently, people adjusted to the trend. However, there was no corresponding increase in salaries as organisations started working on cutting costs.

The effects of the hike still live with us. It is becoming worse especially when many are speculating the return to N140….how long do u think u can live like this? Share my story…

I found this on a bulletin board and decided to try it. And I came across an article saying that you could make thousands of dollars So, I thought yeah right. This must be a scam, Anyway, it said that you send one dollar to each of the five names stated in the article. You then delete the first name and change the numbers. ( 2 becomes 1, 3 becomes 2, 4 becomes 3, etc. Place your own name (liberty acct no.) at number 5 and post the article to at least 200 newsgroups. (there are thousands) Therefore, I decided to try it. Then I invested the measly five dollars. WELL GUESS WHAT!!! Within days, I started getting money in the mail!!! I thought it was going to stop but it just kept coming. My first week, I made $25.00. The end of the second week, I had $800.00. The end of the third week, I made $2,000.00!!! This is my fourth week and I have made a total of over $8,000.00! This is certainly worth $5.00. I promise you that if you follow the directions exactly, that you will start making more money than you possibly thought just by doing something so easy!! SUGGESTION: READ THIS ENTIRE MESSAGE CAREFULLY (Print it out or down load it) Follow the simple directions and watch the money come in! And your investment is only $5.00 (plus postage) IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE: This program remains successful because of the honesty and integrity of the participants. Please continue its success by carefully adhering to the instructions. However, the money made from the mailing list is secondary to the income, which is made from people like you and me asking to be included to that list. Here are the four steps to success:
    STEP 1:
    - Setting up your free liberty reserve account (if you already have an account, just skip this step to STEP 2, if not click here: http://www.libertyreserve.com
    STEP 2
    - Funding your liberty reserve account. You can fund your liberty reserve account locally or through liberty reserve listed exchangers. To easily do this, go to http://www.google.com and search for “liberty reserve exchanger in your country’s name” e.g. “liberty reserve exchanger in Canada”.
    STEP 3
    - Sending liberty reserve money. It is an undeniable law of the universe that we must first give in order to receive”.
Now all you have to do is send $1.00 by way of liberty reserve to each of the liberty reserve account listed below.
After setting up your free liberty reserve account, confirming or verifying it and putting $5 into your liberty reserve account use the account tab on liberty reserve to transfer $1 to each of the numbers on the list. Then remove the top one (#1) and place your liberty reserve account number in the #5 spot on the list of the numbers #1- #5.
    NOTE:
Your liberty reserve account number becomes the #5.
Make sure the subject of the payment says. “PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR EMAIL LIST” (this keeps this program 100% legal. So don’t forget!)
The following are the liberty reserve numbers:
    1. U3087091
    2. U3789457
    3. U0002412
    4. U2037249
    5. U7415495
Note: My own personal liberty reserve account is also included in the list above, so you have to move the last number up to the 4th after depositing $1 each.
Remember, all of this is ABSOLUTELY LEGAL! You are creating a service! A Business.
    STEP 4
    - Adding your liberty reserve account number:
After you send your five $1.00 payments, it’s your turn to add your liberty reserve account number to the list.
Delete the #1 liberty reserve account number off the list you see above, move the other numbers up one after the other (#5 becomes #4, #4 becomes #3, #3 becomes #2, #2 becomes #1.etc). Then put your liberty reserve account number on the list which makes it #5.
It is recommended you post a minimum of 200! Here’s a scenario to show you how this works. – When you post 200 letters, it is estimated that at least 15 people will respond and send you $1 ($15). – Those 15 will post 200 letters each and 225 will send $1 ($225). – Those 225 will post 200 letters each and 3,375 people will send $1 ($3,375). – Those 3,375 people will post 200 letters each and 50,625 people will send you $1 (50,625). – Those 50,625 will post 200 letters each and 749,375 people will send you $1 (749,375). – At this point your name drops off the list, but so far, you have a potential of $803,615.00 with an investment of only $5.00!! REMEMBER, THE MORE NEWSGROUPS YOU POST IN, THE MORE MONEY YOU WILL MAKE!! BUT YOU HAVE TO POST A MINIMUM OF 200!
    NOTE:
Make sure the liberty reserve account number you supply is exactly as it appears in your liberty reserve account.
