(Press Release) – The attention of the National Association of Nigerian Students has been drawn to the threat by the dreaded militant group Boko Haram to launch its assault on about 20 universities in Nigeria.
While certain authorities and individuals are treating the proposed assault as intimated by Boko Haram as a mere rumour, the leadership of the NANS is not prepared to treat the issue with any kind of levity. Our observation has been that, since the series of bombing and other terrorist attacks started rearing its ugly face in Nigeria, the priority of various authorities and government have been the protection of Government infrastructure particularly those that are associated with the Government economic interest.
We are therefore calling on the Federal government and every security apparatus not to treat the threat of bombing of our campuses with levity. We need to remind ourselves that this basic claim of the Boko Haram has been their strong opposition to western education which our tertiary institutions symbolizes.
We want to demand that adequate security measure be put in place by the government and management of all tertiary institutions in Nigeria to prevent any unwarranted threat to lives and properties.
We want to restate our earlier call on President Goodluck Jonathan to urgently convey a National Stakeholders conference on National Security in order to address the current security challenges being faced in the country. All over the world, the task of securing the state and the citizen is not the sole responsibility of government and hence all hands must be brought on deck to ensure a peaceful Nigeria where there is guarantee for the lives and properties of the citizens.
Finally, we appeal to actors and sponsors of the various acts of terrorism in Nigeria to desist as this is not in the interest of our existence as a nation and our development.

Unity NANS President
