One of Africa most coveted award, “Africa Bankers Award” 2011, was recently hosted at the Willard Intercontinental Hotel, Washington DC amidst the IMF/World Bank annual meeting. The event was organised by the African Banker Magazine and IC event.
The award, which brought together companies and industries that have contributed to the reform, modernisation and expansion of the continent’s banking and financial system had about 300 guests in attendance.
This year’s award, which marks its 5th year, was graced by dignitaries like the Director General of the Security Exchange Commission, Jean-Louis Ekra, Honda Shourkry, Managing Director of the Mediterranean Smart Cards Company (MSCC) and the President of Africa Export-import Bank and the CEO of ECO Bank, Arnold Ekpe amongst others.
EFG Hermes, the largest investment bank in Africa and Arab World, won the investment bank of the year award; making it the first Egypt and Arab world based investment bank to win the prestigious accolade. BIM- Banco International de Mocambique also won the best local bank in Africa – the first African Bank award of Mozambique.
Evelyn Oputu, the CEO of Bank of Industry and one of Africa most respected businesswoman nationally and internationally became the first woman to receive the Lifetime Achievement award.
While Egypt National Bank won the socially responsible Bank of the Year, the Managing Director and CEO of Kenya’s largest depositor, Dr James Mwangi of Kenya’s Equity bank won the Africa Banker of the year award for the second time in a row at this year’s Africa Banker’s award. The Standard Bank Group of South Africa won the African Bank of the Year award.
Nigeria also snatched two awards with Golden Sugar Refinery Project, Stanbic IBTC Bank winning the Deal of the Year award while First Bank Nigeria won the award for the most innovative bank of the year.
