LAGOS PHOTO FESTIVAL IS HERE AGAIN.
1October last year saw photography lovers thrilled at the first ever photography festival in west Africa and in Nigeria. The Lagos photo festival is an initiative of African Artist Foundation (AAF) was held primarily at the Expo hall Eko Hotel and suites Victoria island Lagos. The month long festival was sponsored by Etisalat and had over a hundred participants.
According to the events’ blog Lagosphoto.blogspot.com, this year’s festival is in collaboration with the European National Institute for Culture (EUNIC), scheduled to open on Sunday 9th of October 2011 at the Eko hotel and suites convention centre. This years’ theme ‘What’s Next Africa?- The Hidden Stories’ aims to use the power of photography to represent the hidden stories on the continent as opposed to the over represented, sensationalized, dramatic images on Africa across the globe. It also aims to make visible important social issues as well as capture the essence of the continent from a holistic and organic perspective.
The festival holds an array of events scheduled to run for the whole month amongst which are workshop, seminars with local and international photographers like World press photo winner Akintunde Akinleye, Reuters photographer Joseph Penney, Kelechi Amadi Obi and a host of others.
To encourage photography, AAF has also so scheduled an amateur photography competition with the theme ‘Lagos under the prism’ which is to reflect the photographers’ view. The competition sponsored by Etisalat gives the winner the opportunity to smile home with a Digital Single Lens Reflex camera, a blackberry phone with one month free data service.
Lagos photo festival is to hold from October 9 till the end of the month.
