Ghana’s Saya Mobile formally launches at Techcrunch Disrupt – wants to be the “Whatsapp” for feature phones
0We had earlier featured Saya Mobile, a mobile chat app out of Ghana. Saya formally launched at Techcrunch Disrupt in San Francisco, California today. Co-founded by Robert Lamptey, Saya Mobile aims to be the Whatsapp of feature phones around the world. The potential market for this is huge as feature phones still reign supreme in many developing regions of the world including large mass markets like India, Indonesia and Nigeria.
Just as the BBMs and Whatsapps of the world have captured the hearts of smart phone users, Saya aims to bring this same functionality to low end phones. The popularity of mobile messenger apps like 2go in places like Nigeria prove that there is massive opportunity in the space. Till date, 2go has over 20 million users across Africa with about 10 million active monthly users in Nigeria.
Saya intends to depend solely on ads to make revenue from the application and plans to make it completely free to users. It is a product of Ghana’s Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST).
So far, the application has over 400,000 users across emerging markets.
