Senate committee on aviation recommends Arik Air as Nigeria’s national flag carrier
0Nigeria’s leading domestic airline, Arik Air seems poised to dominate the West African airspace. Arik Air which is currently the national carrier of Niger Republic and Sierra Leone may become its home country, Nigeria’s national flag carrier following a recommendation by the country’s senate committee.
The nation’s Senate Committee on Aviation on Wednesday recommended that Arik Air be allowed to serve as Nigeria’s national flag carrier pending the resolution of modalities involved in securing a national carrier for the country.
If this recommendation comes to pass, the airline will be obligated to display the flag of Nigeria in all its aircrafts.
Speaking on the recommendation, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Aviation, Mr. Hope Uzodinma said:
“What we are saying is that for now let’s allow Arik to fly our flag around the world while the ministry of aviation is working out modalities of securing a new national carrier.”
The airline is the dominant airline in the Nigerian airspace and has carried an estimated 10 million passengers since 2006 when it began operations.
