The MTN Afrinolly $100,000 shortfilm competition formally launched this past Friday at the Southern Sun Hotel, Lagos. The competition targeted at budding and budding and innovative film makers in the Nigerian movie industry aims to showcase the best of African short film talent online and provide a platform that can foster the development of local content.
Speaking at the event, CEO of FansConnectOnline, developers of the Afrinolly mobile app, Mr. Chike Maduegbuna said “with this competition, we aim at showcasing African talent online, and providing a platform to foster the creation of new online content produced by Africans.” “Given the high penetration of mobile devices, relative to desktop computers in Africa, the concept of the Afrinolly Shortﬁlm Competition was borne out of the need to create an ecosystem of short (sub-15minutes) ﬁlm/movie content that can be easily consumed on mobile devices.”
Over 1,000 film makers across the continent are expected to participate. Online submissions of entries will run for 3 months, from 1st November 2012 – 31st January 2013. Thereafter, a panel of judges will shortlist finalists, from 1st – 8th February, 2013. Online public voting will run from 11th February – 4th march 2013. The final result will be announced on 6th March, 2013.
Competition partners include MTN Nigeria, Blackberry, iRepresent International Documentary Film Festival, Goethe Institute and Google as Social Media Partner.
