The 18th edition of the Nigerian National Sports Festival tagged Eko 2012, commences today. The Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the 18th National Sports Festival tagged Eko 2012 has assured all of a colourful and memorable opening ceremony today at the Teslim Balogun Stadium.
According to the LOC Secretary General, Kweku Tandoh, Nigerians should not miss the ceremony, as the best of the state will be on display with the gate opening at 3pm with pre-opening ceremony activities.
“I think the opening ceremony is what we want Nigerians not to miss because it is only when they witness it that they can assess it. The pre-activities before the proper opening ceremony will start at 3pm when the gate will be opened, while the main event will commence few minutes after 5pm. So nobody should miss it”.
The Eko 2012 opening ceremony will feature calisthenics and cultural display of the host state.
All the participating states will also be on parade before the torch of unity makes an entry into the Teslim Balogun Stadium, venue of the opening ceremony.
The sports festival will see the participating states competing for medals in 32 events. The events include athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, chess, cricket, cycling, deaf sports (athletics), deaf sports (table tennis), football, gymnastics, handball, hockey, kickboxing, judo, para-athletics, para-powerlifting and para-table tennis.
Others are scrabble, squash, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, trado-Sports (abula), trado-sports (ayo), trado-sports (dambe), trado-sports (kokawa), trado-sports (langa), volleyball, weightlifting and wrestling.
Rivers played host and won the last edition of the sports festival with 135 gold, 79 silver and 85 bronze medals.
