The Irede Foundation was founded in 2012 by Crystal Chigbu, mother of Irede Beulah Chigbu who was born with congenital limb deformity. Crystal and husband, Zubby were told that their daughter was missing a tibia and patella in her right leg six days after Irede was delivered. Doctors gave a verdict; Irede would experience a normal life if she undergoes amputation and prosthesis. It took 2 years for Zubby and Crystal to succumb to having the surgery.
Crystal has moved away from the perplexity to being a pillar for spirited Irede and other children with disabilities. Mrs. Chigbu decided that children living with limb loss or other forms of congenital disorder need to be encouraged. This was the mindset that brought about the Irede Foundation, which she named after her daughter.
Crystal believes that the worst kind of disability is in the mind; and shares this with all kids with limb loss, their families and care-givers.
In 2014 over 600 people including Ace Actress Kate Henshaw, Ali Baba, Family Life Consultant Praise Fowowe, and host of other Nigerian celebrities walked 2km with several amazing child amputees and Crystal. Come May 1, Out on a Limb Advocates and friends take another walk; this Awareness Walk happens on the 1st of May, 2015, YMCA Building, by Mobil Filling Station, Ikoyi, Lagos, 7:00am
