Blessing Okagbare outshone some big wigs to win in the 100m of the Shanghai leg of the 2015 Diamonds leg on Saturday, May 16.
Okagbare finished the race in 10.98 to win the race ahead of last year’s world leader Tori Bowie and Jamaican Olympic champion Shelly-Anne Fraser-Pryce.
Just two weeks ago, Blessing led Nigeria’s relay team consisting of Regina George, Dominique Duncan and Christy Udoh- to win the 4x200m gold of the Bahamas Relay.
“My race was pretty good, it is not easy to compete with the best of the world – but I won. I focused on my start. Normally I don’t have the best start, but now I was leading from the beginning.” Blessing was reported to have said after the race.
Blessing Okagbare born 9 October 1988 in Sapele, Delta State of Nigeria track and field athlete who specializes in long jumping and short sprints. She is an Olympic and World Championships medalist in the long jump, and a world medalist in the 200 metres. She also holds the Women’s 100 metres Commonwealth Games record for the fastest time at 10.85 seconds. Her 100 m best of 10.79 makes her the African record holder for the event. She was the African 100 m and long jump champion in 2010. She has also won medals at the All-Africa Games and the IAAF Continental Cup.
