Giving out and receiving greeting cards during special occasions, including Christmas, Birthdays, Anniversaries, Weddings and Valentine was at one point very common. It was something we all looked forward to years ago, but the culture seems to be fading out.
Only a few girlfriends are interested in receiving cards on Valentine’s Day, very few people are interested in knocking at your door to deliver a birthday card when a post on your Facebook wall will suffice and be much more appreciated.
The loss of interest in this one time highly popular culture of giving and receiving greeting cards is probably as a result of the cards being too plain and boring. This must have been the thought of Greetings World founders, Abodunrin & Wamide Opanuga, who started an online greeting card store that not only allows users to book greeting cards for occasions, but also enables them personalize and customize their cards.
According to the couple, “Right from our courtship days, we have always seen cards as a medium to convey and express thoughtful messages to one another. Over time we realized that the messages in these cards had a positive impact on us as individuals and eventually our relationship”.
The Opanugas started out in 2011 by selling their physical cards in shops around Lagos, but business was slow and they were forced to look for a new direction. Noticing that most businesses were taking their products and services to the internet and e-commerce was becoming enormous in the country, they made a move to set up the greeting cards online store in July 2014.
The move paid off, and the Opanugas are selling more and more each month. In an interview with CNN’s African Startup, Wamide said: “We want to revive the culture of giving greeting cards. When it’s your friend’s birthday, or you mum’s birthday, you should send a personalized greeting card.”
Cards on greetingsworld.com.ng have been grouped into several categories, including – Birthday Cards, Occasional Cards, Seasonal Cards and Thoughtful Cards. Features on the website include the Card Customizer that allows users to customize every design with their own words and images, the Delivery Date Selector to get cards delivered on a preferred date, and Edimaw, an online shop assistant that helps suggest the most suitable card for that special occasion.
Greetings World also offers users gift vouchers. “What happens is we print a code with the greeting card and that code gives you access to pick anything you want in that store,” said Abodunrin. The Opanugas noted that the Greetings World website promises an experience that is simple, convenient and enjoyable, as it was built on a foundation of features they believe people will get to know and love.
Gone are the days when the content of the greeting card you purchased didn’t fully express your feelings, Greetings World conveys messages of hope, affection, and inspiration.
