The Nigerian education ministry has written to the Maryam Abacha American University of Niger (Maryam Abacha University) to confirm the accreditation of the school.
The ministry said it worked with the NUC to resolve the accreditation, as the Republic of Niger is one of the countries that have a bilateral agreement with Nigeria. Therefore, any approval by the Republic of Niger is recognized by Nigeria.
“The Federal Ministry of Education and the National University Commission (NUC) have resolved the issue surrounding the accreditation status of Maryam Abacha American University, Maradi, Niger Republic,” said the letter signed by J. N. Ibe, the director of Education Support Services.
The letter, presented to journalists in Abuja, said that Maryam Abacha American University of Niger is on the ministry’s list of accredited Universities.
“The University accreditation agreement was contained in the Niger ministerial order No.000241/MES/R/I/SG/DGE/DL/DES/DEPRI dated 26th November, 2013 delivered by the Diaspora, Niamey, to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria,” the letter stated.
Maryam Abacha University of Niger, (MAAUN) was nurtured in 2013. It is a private University located in Maradi, Niger Republic, just about 90KM away from Katsina State of Nigeria. It is founded by Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, a Nigerian and veteran Journalist. The institution is named after the former first lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Hajiya Maryam Sani Abacha for her philanthropic gesture and contribution to the development of the African continent. The University was recommended by Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific research of Niger Republic and also recommended by the Evaluation & Accreditation Division/Education Support Services Department of the Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja.
MAAUN is established to provide knowledge for research and development of needed manpower resources for the growth of students and the society at large. It is also established to cater for the needs and aspirations of students in areas of learning, research and development studies. It is the first English University in Niger Republic. The thrust of the university is purely based on knowledge, creativity, and discipline and manpower development. It is the policy of the institution to enhance discipline, and develop its learning based on the World best practice, reputation and ingenuity.
Maryam Abacha University runs undergraduate degree courses in core sciences, social sciences and the arts and it is expected to graduate its first set of students in 2016.
