First National Bank of Botswana believes that it is essential that customers protect their private details to prevent themselves from becoming victims of online fraud. FNB, the first financial institution to introduce digital banking to Botswana advises customers to be vigilant of scammers when purchasing via money transfer and online platforms.
FNB’s Fraud and Investigation Manager, Gorata Seboko said, “Cyber crime has many faces, which include scammers luring victims to divulge their credit card and mobile banking passwords, or luring them to purchasing from non-verified online shopping sites. We are in the generation of the information age and though technology makes our lives a little easier, it needs users to be more vigilant of where and how they make their purchases, when using mobile and online platforms. As a first rule of caution, we advise our customers to never accept email, telephone calls or mobile SMS requests for their private details or banking passwords, as this is a common method scammers use to gain access to their money.”
FNB says key tips to follow, when considering a purchase online are as indicated below:
a) Do not share your credit card number online unless the site is a secure and reputable site. A secure and reputable site will have a tiny icon of a padlock which symbolizes a higher level of security to transmit data. Though this icon is not a guarantee of a secure site, it provides some assurance.
b) Before using a site, look for the security/encryption software it uses. Make sure to purchase merchandise from a reputable source. Do some asking around with colleagues and family and Google searches on the selling individual or company to ensure that they are legitimate.
c) Obtain a physical address rather than just a post office box and a telephone number, and call the seller to see if the telephone number is correct and working. It is essential to do background research on the seller.
d) Do not purchase from sellers who do not provide you with information. Do not easily trust a person or company by their website. Flashy websites can be set up within minutes.
e) Be very cautious when responding to special investment offers; especially through unsolicited e-mails and be very cautious when dealing with individuals or companies from outside your country of residence. And lastly, if possible, purchase items online using your FNB credit card, because charges can be disputed if something goes wrong or looks suspicious.
