Hapoel Be’er Sheva of Israel midfielder, John Ugochukwu Ogu has emerged as one of the leading candidates to be named Player of the Week in the Israeli Premier League for the past round of matches alongside fellow-Nigerian and former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Dele Aiyenugba of Bnei Yehuda.
The Nigeria international has been nominated for the prestigious accolade alongside Maccabi Tel Aviv skipper Eran Zahavi, Tomer Suissa (Hapoel Haifa) , Dele Aiyenugba (Bnei Yehuda ) and Maccabi Petah Tikva shot – stopper Itamar Nitzan.
In his 14 straight start of this season, Ogu scored a very important goal in the fourth minute of second – half stoppage time as Hapoel Be’er Sheva beat Ironi Kiryat Shmona 2 – 1.
On the other hand, Dele Aiyenugba, who kept a clean sheet in Bnei Yehunda’s goalless draw with Maccabi Haifa and stopped his side from conceding in injury time with a brilliant save.
Ogu’s club played a 1-1 draw to tie a 2-2 draw on aggregate, but Beitar Jerusalem won 4-2 through penalties and they failed to reach the last four of the cup competition.
Be’er Sheva are second on the Israeli top flight league with 32 points from 14 games, same as leaders Maccabi Tel Aviv.
Readers of one.co.il will have until Thursday, December 17 to vote for the Player of the Week in the top flight. We do wish the Nigerian duo the best in their quest to continually make Africa’s name soar high in far away Israel.
