Heerema Fabrication Group, recently announced that the Alba B3 topside and jacket have been successfully installed at the Alba field, offshore Equatorial Guinea. The platform sailed away from the Netherlands towards its offshore location in December 2015. The jacket was built at the company’s yard in Vissingen and the topside was built at the Zwijndrecht yard under a contract awarded by the Houston-based oil and gas company Marathon Oil in April 2013.
The transportation and installation scope of work was conducted by the company’s sister division Heerema Marine Contractors. The company used the Thialf crane vessel for final offshore installation.
The 5,800-tonne topside is 40 meters long and 40 meters wide with the height reaching 35 meters while 33-meter-long, 4-legged jacket is 33 meters wide and 81 meters high. The topside, was paired with the 91-meter tall jacket which weighs 2.600 tonnes at the Alba field, located some 32 kilometers offshore Malabo.
The Alba 3 platform is to compress gas from the current Alba B2 platform via a 33-meter-long bridge connection. Marathon, however, expects to increase its production from the gas and condensate field with this new platform, Offshore Energy Today reports.
The Alba gas field is a gas and condensate field discovered in 1984. It is one of the largest producers of natural gas and condensate of the Guinea Gulf, is off Equatorial Guinea in about 75 m of water depth of the West Africa Continental Shelf, 32 km north of Bioko Island. It came online in 1991 with reserve estimates of 4.6 Tcf and 400 MMbbl. Beginning in 2002, Marathon Oil and its partners started developing non-associated gas from the Alba field. Once the gas and condensate are extracted, it is exported to a central processing facility onshore at Punta Europa on Bioko Island.
Over the years, Marathon and its partners have expanded Alba’s offshore facilities to include two production platforms, B1 and B2, supporting 11 producing wells and five gas injection wells. Production rates reached 65,000 b/d of condensate.
In April 2013, Marathon awarded Heerema Fabrication Group an EPCI contract for the installation of a greenfield gas compression platform. The Alba B3 platform will consists of a 4,500-ton topsides module and a 4-legged, 265 ft high jacket. The platform will connect via bridge to the Alba B2 platform.
