The International Atomic Energy Agency, IAEA, have indicated interest to generate 4,000 megawatts of electricity using nuclear energy for Nigeria. This energy set to be generated is set to help Nigeria solve its electricity problems.
According to the agency, it will commerce with 1000MW of electricity in the first instance and increased later to 4,000 megawatts.
Mr. Yukiya Amano, who is the Director-General of the IAEA was at the Presidential Villa of President Muhammadu Buhari earlier this week to cement the deal, said he was happy that the organization was developing a program from which Nigeria would benefit.
President Buhari charged the IAEA to do more to support Nigeria, in view of the long years of its association and support for the nuclear regulatory agency. The meeting which had the ministers also attracted the presence of the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo. Addressing the President, Mr. Amano said he was pleased to see that Nigeria was taking the correct steps toward a safe usage of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
It can be recalled that the electricity supply of the country dropped to an all time low last week which necessitated the call by citizens of the country on the government, to find all means possible to create a better energy state for the nation.
Citizens have also decried the increase in electricity tariff by the Minister of Power, Babatunde Raji Fashola, saying the energy bill has increased but the availability of power for both industrial and domestic usage hasn’t done likewise.
