In a bid to deepen tourism in Africa, two tech-oriented students from Makerere University have launched a pan African tourism news portal that enlists over 50 African countries. The portal dubbed www.safariants.com is making headways in the tourism industry on the continent for its innovative way of packaging all the strategic tourist attraction features in Africa.
This is a first of its kind in Africa and aims to publicize the African narrative of endowment with magnificent natural resources and sceneries.
www.safariants.com has key information as per the countries that are in Africa. The details include best travel destinations per country, tourist attractions, museums, zoos, hotels and more. The team as well as content creators from the various countries update the information from each country frequently.
The team has allowed content creators from various countries to sign up with them and help with providing of information from the specific countries. The website also allows travelers to share their experiences at these destinations as they travel. Content creators profile destinations giving information in categories such as; “About”, “Getting There” and “Things to do”. The team in charge later verifies the information in order to limit repetitions and distortions.
Although the project is more media related, Kenneth and Mercy have developed it with no background to media. They are all software engineer students from Makerere University.
According to Mercy, there is need to deviate from the ‘hardware’ norm. “Many of our counter parts are taking the hardware root which is not bad but is quickly degenerating into a monotonous activity. Here we are triggering our innovation skills to try to offer solutions to the African continent as well conquering new frontiers. In fact at first we knew it was the ideal idea because the logistics needed to venture into it were minimal; one needs a laptop and creativity and then all is set!”
The innovative and creative nature of the startup has seen it recognized as the overall winner in the recently concluded College of Computing and Information Science Connect IT Expo 2016.
