When you walk into the showroom of House of Bunor, a fashion outfit, you are immediately struck by its palatial look. From Victorian chairs that have seated clients like Senator Florence Ita-Giwa, actress Stephanie Okereke, and Lagos State first lady ,Abimbola Fashola, to the full-length mirrors and cream patterned curtains adorning the walls, to the gorgeously dressed mannequins, the place exudes creativity. Soon, the brain behind the design house, Frank Osodi, emerges, wearing a fitted white shirt, black trousers, and a pair ofblack leather slippers. His carriage in his simple-yet classy outfit helps you understand why designers’ likeDakova, Remi Lagos, and Labanela employed him earlier as a model.
Born on August 17, 1965, in Lagos, to a mother who involved all her six children in dressmaking when they were quite young, Frank has grown to become a renowned fashion designer.”I never liked it, and anytime she called meto cut a fabric I would say, ‘what is my own with all this stuff?'” His attitude has since changed, as this art started paying his bills while still in school.”I studied visual and graphic arts in the College of Textile Technology, Lagos. Before I finished my studies, I had started modeling, making sketches, and selling to designers.” After graduation, he did his youth service with Princess International (a popular fashion label at the time).
Frank’s attempt to work as a graphic designer and visual artist after serving in the National Youth Service Corps was not realised because of his customers, who wanted him to continue with his fashion work.”One of them brought and dumped bags of clothes in my house and said, ‘I don’t care what you do or how you do it, just get them done.’ She placed about N50,000 on the table and said, ‘let me know the balance when you are ready.'”This led to the creation of his fashion label, House of Bunor, in 1988. Bunor is the short form of his name Irebunor. HOB specializes in bridal and evening couture.
Frank became more popular in 2001 when the model, Agbani Darego, whom he dressed and groomed, won the Miss World contest. According to him, this gave his work exposure and he saw his customers increase.
