We all have dreams as children. As a child I wanted to be a soldier. (In retrospect I think the movie “Rambo” had something to do with it.. :))
Many people start out their adult lives trying to pursue their dreams and the “big bad world” bullies them out of it! Let’s face it, life is a bully. Life scares our dreams away in many ways; it could be through the fear of paying bills, or through the fear of failure, challenges or hard work…And then there are the “haters;” those who condemn our efforts and constantly tell us through their actions or words that we will never get there. Or friends who praise us in person but in private sabotage our efforts… Indeed the obstacles are plentiful and are often, never ending…
But we should all realize that whether we like it or not, our dreams are meant to be challenged. We have to have a battle-like mindset when it comes to our dreams, knowing that many people and things will challenge our dreams and goals and that it is our duty to protect them. This is because the unfortunate truth is that if we wake up 40 years from now disappointed because we abandoned our dreams, we have ourselves to blame and no one else. We let go too soon and will sadly find ourselves applauding those who kept the faith and burnt the mid-night oil.
There is nothing wrong with cheering others but you too deserve to be applauded. Therefore, why give up? Why should you let life “the bully” push you around?
If you have let go of your dreams, this article is not trying to rub it in your face. I want to let you know that we can always put on our gloves and start fighting again. This is one of the most honorable battles in life.
There seems to be this pervasive idea that chasing your dreams and fulfilling your potential is meant to feel natural and be easy. This is a lie. Study every one who has ever done something of note in this world. It was hard, back breaking work. It took courage, discipline and extraordinary resolve. Most times when we hear about successful people, we somehow fail to focus and learn from the not so glamorous parts of their story and the numerous nights when they doubted themselves or the times when life pushed them around, and they stood up to it and said NO. Like them, we should say no too to life’s bullyish ways more often.
The path to true success is rough, however, even rougher is the disappointment and regret you will have to live with for the rest of your life, if you give up, if you don’t keep pushing…
Think about it…Stand up to life today!
