I bumped into an old school friend at the mall last week. Let us call him Geoff, now a successful realtor. Looking at his wide smile and infectious confidence, one would have never thought that this is the guy who was practically written off as an academic disaster by teachers and peers alike. Shiny gold watch, smart and well pressed shirt matched with a trouser firmly fastened close to his chest line to conceal a bulging stomach.
‘Success for some people depends on becoming well known; for others it depends on never being found out.’ Ashleigh Brilliant
“Geoff, is that you? You look so different!”. I remarked. After about 5 minutes exchanging pleasantries, Geoff began to tell me about his remarkable journey from being voted “person most likely to fail in life” to turning round and becoming an overwhelming success. It was a litany of pains and great triumphs tempered by a steadiness, resilience and a determination to succeed.
With Geoff’s story fresh in the back of my mind I began to dig back into the past and examine how these so called academic ‘write-offs’ had turned out. It was one of the most satisfying quests I had ever taken and below are 7 golden nuggets of wisdom which transformed my friends life and can make a difference in yours as well.
1. Have a defining purpose or Goal.
2. Cultivate a rich network of contacts.
‘Everytime I went out socialising instead of book-worming I was steadily building my contact base. Today they are my customers. (Acquire one key contact every week)
3. Believe in yourself
4. Brand yourself better than Coca-Cola
5. Never give up (Failure is only Feedback)
6. Never stop dreaming; All it takes is one good idea
7. Keep your sense of humour. (see the funny side of life : spark your creative genius)
Try these out and see if it works for you!
