The Southern Sudan Referendum Commission recently formally confirmed the formation of South Sudan as an independent state under the leadership of Salva Kiir Mayardit after 98% of voters voted for its secession.
Sudan’s Vice President confirmed to Reuters early this week that he accepted the oil-producing south’s split.
“We announce our agreement and our acceptance of the result of the referendum announced [Monday],” Vice President Ali Osman Mohamed Taha told reporters in the north’s first reaction since the results.
“Congratulations to all of you, we are very happy,” Salva Kiir Mayardit of South Sudan told thousands of supporters on Monday. “We still have a long way forward, and I would like you to be peaceful towards everybody and towards your brothers in the north”
