It was a day he had longed for. His waiting and longings were over and his dream has finally become a reality. He was inaugurated like his counterparts across the nation. He took his oath of office with great joy and an atom of fear of how this new chapter of his life will unfold. The program was eventful with dignitaries from within and outside of the state to grace the occasion. It was a successful celebration with a massive attendance. The expectation on his head was very high based on the enormous problems and the age long crisis within the state.
He moved into the state house with a catalogue of promises and proffered solutions to the lingering problems to his people. He had everything to his comfort and every sight around him was pleasant. He had the welfare of the populace as his first priority, then the restructuring of the state administratively and the fulfillment of his 10-point agenda. His victory at the polls came to him as a great shock because he defeated the incumbent with a very wide margin. The failure of his past two attempts seems to have propelled and enhance his popularity. Though, significantly the desire for a change in mantle by the electorate was the ultimate decider.
With the end of his tenure staring him in the face, he could barely lay hold on a tangible thing he had done. Years have turned into months; months into weeks, and weeks into days, his inauguration seem almost like yesterday. The pressure from the opposition is so intense and the media as their frontline weapon. He looked back at the beginning and said aloud to himself:
“In a flash of time my eyes were opened to behold the other side of the world
Where the grasses are lush green and the fields are well watered
Nurtured vineyards with ripe grapes to drink
The glory of the sun does not go down here and every sight is pleasurable
A place where power, wealth, glamour, and authority reigns without boundaries
The quietness and the serenity of the environment cannot but be imagined
In the hollow of time
I sit wanting to know if this experience was real
I could touch, feel, smell, see, and know
Without a doubt, there are two halves to all things
Life is better than death as light is to darkness
Knowing fully well that I am in my sane mind
I could see how different where I was from, with the four walls of my new abode
If all man where to live in this comfort, no one will want to die
If a man finds himself at this junction, he may not remember who he was yesterday
Or how he looked in the mirror a moment ago
Words cannot be counted upon neither will promises hold sway
Our worlds’ are different is the new song
What you see is not what I see?
You live in hope, I live in realty
You have many fears but this is the only fear I have
And it is that I should never take off these clothes.”
Weary and grieved by these thoughts he asked himself these questions- do I still love this people. Where is my passion for a change? Was I really prepared for this assignment? Have I gotten too comfortable and neglected my mission to this place? Have the paraphernalia of the office submerged my vision? Now I know better the reason why the late Sage Chief Obafemi Awolowo denied himself the pleasure of this place. Of a truth, all these comfort were given to me so that I will not be distracted. But it is amazing to note that it has turned to my valley of forgetfulness. I have been given a second chance in office. I promise myself and the populace that I will maximize each day to the fulfillment of my agenda. I vow that I will not disappoint. To the newcomers to this arena, beware, because the road ahead is very slippery and let not your new abode consume you.
