The Government of Lagos state recently put forward a bill banning landlords/ladies in the states from collecting rent in excess of one year from new tenants, Vanguard reports. Non complying landlords/landladies are liable to punishment by the state. According to the bill, it is officially now criminal for an agent to demand to receive rent in excess of six months from a sitting tenant.
A fine of about N100,000 or three years imprisonment would be charged to agents who go against the law. Tagged, ‘A bill for a law to regulate rights and obligations under tenancy agreement and the relationship between landlord and the tenant including the procedure for the recovery of premises and for other connected purposes in Lagos State’ the bill is a welcome recourse for struggling families and young people in the state who previously had to pay for their rent 2 years in advance. The bill will be signed into law soon by Governor Fashola of Lagos State.
