(Press Release) – The National Association of Nigerian Students having critically observed the reoccurring crisis in Jos and its environ in the Northern part of Nigeria hereby wishes to urgently call on the Federal Government to find means of putting a stop to this deplorable crisis.
It is saddening that at a period when Peace is being advocated globally, our country on a daily basis is becoming a subject of conflict and unwarranted violence perpetrated on such frivolous reasons like religion or ethnic differences.
We see the repeated crisis in Jos as an act that is not only barbaric and primitive, but sponsored, organised and perpetuated by individuals who are hell bent on destabilizing our peaceful coexistence as a nation. The perpetrators of the Jos violence which has had mostly women and children as their victims to the best of our knowledge are not invisible.
These killings are no longer acceptable to NANS and we hereby call on both the Federal Government and the government of Plateau state to conduct a holistic probe into the pogrom that has left the hitherto beautiful state a shadow of its old self.
As at this moment, Economic and social life in the once enviable city of Jos had been brought to a standstill and no resident of the state can now go to bed with their two eyes closed.
While we recognized the previous roles of the Federal Government in finding a lasting solution to the perennial crisis in Jos, we wish to demand that a radical approach be taken now by the government to call the situation into order. We are unhappy with the inability of the federal government to come out with the reports and white papers of previous committees that has been instituted to investigate the Jos crisis.
We cannot continue to subject the lives of our Students in Jos and other innocent citizens into unnecessary danger in the case of the failure of the authorities to bring perpetrators of ethno-religious crisis to book.
We wish to restate that the perpetrators of violence in Jos and other parts of the country are not invisible and hence must be brought to Justice at all cost.
Nigeria must begin to attach great value to the life of every citizen irrespective of where he or she lives.
Aluta Continua, Victoria ascerta.
Unity NANS President.
