Dot Africa (.africa) is set to become the continent’s top level domain and the African Union recently selected South African registry operator, UniForum SA to administer the soon to be launched domain.
Commenting on its recent selection, UniForum SA director, Neil Dundas, said “This is an important step for organizations and individuals interested in acquiring an African online identity, as dotAfrica will give added visibility and identity to operations in the region.”
AU representative, Abulkhirat Esam “The African Union Commission will work with its appointed Registry Operator to establish ways to promote dotAfrica. Specific outcomes will be increased online content generation; the establishment of policies and rules on registrations, intellectual property and dispute resolution; as well as the promotion of ICT use in the region.”
The hope is that the dot africa domain will help promote the development of Africa’s Internet ecosystem.
What do you think of the proposed .africa top level domain for the continent? Do you think it is better than African countries’ top level domains? e.g. .com.ng, co.za e.t.c.?
