Maliyo Games, a Nigerian gaming company co-founded by a Nigerian in the Diaspora, Hugo Obi has been releasing locally relevant games to Nigerians online. Its games like “Mosquito Smasher,” “Aboki” and “Okada Ride” among others are intuitive and easy to use, depicting every day Nigerian life.
We caught up briefly with Hugo Obi to understand more about the company’s plans and how he started out. According to Hugo, he started Maliyo Games because he has a passion for web and mobile based content. During a recent visit to Nigeria, he said he noticed that the country had undergone many changes since he left for the United Kingdom many years ago for his undergraduate education. He specifically noticed gaming as an untapped area in the Nigerian market and thus decided to launch Maliyo Games.
Though Hugo is not a technical co-founder, he told us he works with developers to build out the games and brings his strong project management skills to bear .
What attracted us to Maliyo were the strong graphics in the games. They are locally relevant and can potentially attract national appeal.
The games are unfortunately not available on mobile devices yet but Hugo has assured us that there are plans to launch these as early as the fourth quarter of this year.
