Nigeria’s country code Top Level Domain Names, .ng which is the country’s identifier on the World Wide Web now has an estimated 30,000 domains purchased. This number was disclosed by the Chief Operating Officer of the Nigerian Internet Registration Association, NiRA, Mr. Ope Odusan during the fifth Annual General Meeting of the association recently held in Lagos.
According to him, there were about 9,000 .ng domains registered in 2011 but this number has quickly accelerated to about 30,000 today led mostly by demand from countries outside Nigeria.
“It’s ironic that the foreigners who many often say are not always ready to do business with any business with .ng domain constitute the largest owners of the .ng domain names.”
.ng is attractive internationally because of it’s potential usage for catchy every day words. For instance, domains such as shoppi.ng, bloggi.ng and chatti.ng are but a few domain use cases that are registered.
NiRA has been criticized for the notoriously high price it charges for .ng domains. The domains recently crashed from an exhorbitant N500, 000 to about N15,000 (~$100). Despite the crash, the domain price is still relatively high by international standards.
