National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) is a Federal Government agency mandated to deal specifically in the area of Capital goods, research, production and reverse engineering which conducts developmental work in the areas of manufacturing and coordinating the proliferation of technologies developed either within or outside of its Centers including patents obtained. Technologies developed in the areas of spares, components and systems engineering are to be transferred to Entrepreneurs for the production of goods and services.
The agency operates mainly through her Development Institutes. Each of the Institutes has a unique mandate of Engineering Infrastructural development. At present, there are Eight (8) Development Institutes. These Institutes have developed various technologies some of which have been ceded to the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The idea of establishing NASENI was a model after similar agencies in fast growing economies in Asia like Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand etc.
The development institutes located around Nigeria are:-
- Scientific Equipment Development Institutes (SEDI) in Enugu and Minna
- Electronic Development Institute (ELDI), Awka
- Hydraulic Equipment Development Institute (HEDI), Kano
- Engineering Materials development Institute (EMDI), Akure
- National Engineering Design Development Institute (NEDDI), Nnewi
- Power Equipment and Electrical Machines Development (PEEMADI), Okene
- Prototype Engineering Development Institute (PEDI), Ilesha
- Advanced Manufacturing Technology Project (AMT-P), Jalingo
The Director General, Dr. Mohammed Sani Haruna said it had made drastic impact in the Power (a Solar Panel manufacturing plant in Karshi; development of small Hydro Power and Turbines; design and production of 15KVA Transformers for local markets; production of a Gordian AVR Stabilizer; design and production of Pole-mounted Transformers, design and construction of a Solar Rechargeable Lamp/multiple Cell Phone Chargers; Solar Inverter, Solar street light [ELSOLITE); development and installation of a 5 kilowatts kinetic Hydro Turbine at Mada River, Gudi village in Akwanga, Nasarawa State and the development of NASENI Propeller Hydro-Turbine), Transportation (the designed and manufactured 1st made-in-Nigeria motorcycle (NASENI-M1), the design and manufacturing of 1st made-in-Nigeria tricycles, passenger/cargo models (Keke NASENI); the design and manufacturing of automotive spare parts); Agriculture and Water Resources (the design and manufacturing of integrated Cassava Processing Plant; mobile Cassava Grater and Rotary Dryer for garri, flour, starch and odourless fufu; manufacture of Seed Oil Expeller; design and built-up table-top fruit Milling Machine for palm kernel soup (ofe akwu), development of efficient Deep Well Hand Pump for Water Solution, production of Manual Drilling Rig and reverse engineering of drilling rig heads for National Water Research Institute (NWRI), Kaduna) and Education sectors (designed and manufactured a high quality, globally accepted complete set of Mobile Science and Integrated Science Laboratories Equipment called the science kits for primary (PSK) and junior secondary schools (JSK) and also established two centers of excellence in Foundry Education for Molding of component parts at Federal Polytechnic, Idah and Taraba State Polytechnic, Jalingo).
The agency, he also said, had successfully designed and produced a wood master for woodworks and for teaching woodwork in technical schools and had set up advanced manufacturing technology (AMT) centers in nine universities within the NDDC states, adding the project was sponsored by Skill ‘G’ and NNPC.
“…these interventions has become necessary to support the agency’s programs that will boost local production of goods, create jobs/wealth, especially in energy and agro-allied sectors and stimulate provision of services,” Haruna further stated.
