H.E.W.S. (Health, Education,Work & Shelter Foundation) Foundation was established in 2010 by the duo of Remi & Funmi Adeseun. This is in line with their inclination towards contributing to the socio-economic development of Nigeria by improving the quality of life of children, young persons, adults and their families as well as their community and society at large.
The Foundation taps into the innate humanity and tremendous capacity of volunteers who are willing to contribute their T.I.M.E (Time, Ideas, Money & Energy) to help it achieve her goal(s) of building a knowledge-based, community-network of healthy and spirit-filled citizens. Her works had seen them partner with sponsors like Sahara Energy Limited, Total PLC, Agip/Eni PLC, NAOL, Rodot Ltd, Folawiyo Energy PLC and states of Lagos, Gombe, Ondo, Ekiti and also with friends, family and associates, as well as collaboration with Public Health Practitioners, Healthcare Professionals, Housing Experts, Human Resource Executives, Administrators, IT specialists amongst others.
HEWS Foundation had partnered with Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria, (SPDC) to sponsor the surgeries of 10 children with cleft lip and upper palate disorders.
The President and Founder of HEWS, Dr. Remi Adeseun, urged the people to refrain from self-medication, which he said, “is very dangerous to the health of the people.” He specifically told pregnant women not to engage in self-medication and called on well-meaning Nigerians to assist the less privileged by donating to tackle their health challenges like cleft lip/palate/ benign jaw tumors.
The Chief Medical Director, (CMD), Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), said the partners and foundation are supporting the vision of Ekiti State government to make healthcare affordable to the people. He added that the team comprises doctors from the teaching hospital in the state who are for the third time giving support to indigent patients.
A cleft lip contains an opening in the upper lip that may extend into the nose. The opening may be on one side, both sides, or in the middle. A cleft palate is when the roof of the mouth contains an opening into the nose. These disorders can result in feeding problems, speech problems, hearing problems, and frequent ear infections. Less than half the time the condition is associated with other disorders. Cleft lip and palate is due to tissues of the face not properly joining together during development. They are a type of birth defect. The cause in most cases is unknown.
