Nigeria’s Under 17 team popularly referred to as the Golden Eaglets have emerged as the Champions of the FIFA Under 17 World Cup in Vina Del Mar, Chile.
The win comes as a record fifth one after winning the first edition held in 1985. The match saw Nigeria missing an opportunity to open the scoring by losing a penalty. The Malian team came into the match as African Champions while the Nigerian team came forth at the Under 17 Africa Nations Cup.
The world champions had earlier been encouraged during a meeting with the country’s President which was held via Skype. The eaglets came into the match with high hopes having set a record of 10 goals with 9 coming from one player.
Although, Nigeria’s success at the Under 17 competition hasn’t translated into success at the Senior cadres with most of these players either not making it into Nigeria’s Super Eagles or their fantastic form drops over the years, experts believe these players are quite promising owing to their relatively young age and their composure.
Congratulations to all the players who has successfully brought glory unto the country one more time. Meanwhile the Nigeria Under 20 female team known as the Falconets have qualified for the Under 20 world cup after beating South Africa away from home 0-1 and winning the tie on aggregate. The competition is to be held in Papa New Guinea.
