A Nigerian, Wellington Jighere has emerged as the World Scrabble Champion over the weekend. He enters the record books as the first African to ever win the World Championship.
He emerged as the champion after defeating and Englishman, Lewis Mackay 4-0 in a Best of Seven series in far away Australia.
He had already finished first, in a 32-Game marathon to qualify for the two-man finals and had to beat the Lewis to emerge as the World Champion.
It is also noteworthy that Wellington Jighere came third at the 2007 edition of the World Championship.
This year’s edition also saw five Nigerian players finishing among the top 50 players of the tournament.
This feat infers that the country would gain more slots in terms of epresentatives at subsequent tournaments.
The President of the country has also congratulated the team for making Nigeria and the entire Africa proud at the championship.
