According to a letter sent to the General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi by FIFA, Samuel Chukwueze has just won the bronze boot of the just concluded FIFA Under-17 World Cup.
In the tournament which Nigeria emerged a record fifth time champion saw the Number 10 man, Kelechi Nwakali being wrongly handed the bonze boot to after having scored three goals and as many assists.
The same tourney saw Kelechi Nwakali tied with Samuel Chukwueze both on goals and assists and FIFA has explained via its letter that Nwakali played more minutes (630 minutes) as against Samuel Chukwueze’s 535 minutes and hence the latter should be the winner.
The letter was sent by the FIFA’s director of football division Mustapha Fahmy and it read thus: “Instead of player no. 8 of Nigeria, Samuel Chukwueze, the player Kelechi Nwakali (player no. 10 of Nigeria) received the adidas Bronze Boot. However, if two or more players are still equal (after goals and assists), the player who has played fewer number of minutes will be ranked first.
“With this in mind, adidas will send you another Bronze Boot in December 2015, which we would kindly ask you to hand over to Samuel Chukwueze. Please be informed that Kelechi Nwakali may keep his trophy.”
At the tournament, Samuel Chukwueze scored two goals against Chile and the other one against Australia. His fastest goal of 25 seconds in the tournament made him the scorer of the third fastest goal in the history of the competition third-fastest goal in the history of the competition, exceeded in speed only by Brazilians Fabinho at Korea 2007 and Celso at Peru 2005, who took only nine and 14 seconds respectively to find the back of the net.
