The New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) is a major continental initiative aimed at the political and economic renewal of Africa. The key objectives of NEPAD which includes, the promotion of sustainable growth and development, eradication of poverty, and ending the marginalisation of Africa in the current era of globalisation. The NEPAD Business Group Nigeria (NBGN) was formed in response to the need to galvanize the private sector to support and actively participate in the implementation of the programmes of NEPAD at both national and continental levels.
The Former Minister of Industry, Dr. (Mrs) Nike Akande, CON, is set to take over as Chairman of the NEPAD Business Group Nigeria (NBGN) at the 3rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the organisation slated for today, December 8, 2015 at the Diamond Suite, Eko Hotels & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos. She will be taking over from the incumbent Chairman, Chief Chris Ezeh, MFR.
Akande is a seasoned industrialist and a believer of strong and virile private sector as the engine and catalyst of economic growth. She is a founding member and a Director Board Member of the Group as well as a foundation member of the Nigeria Economic Summit Group (NESG) and Member of the African Business Roundtable (ABR).
Among other achievements, Akande is a Director, PZ Cussons, Foundation, Board Member, Bank Directors Association of Nigeria (BDAN), Chairman, Entrepreneurial Studies (AES) Excellence Club, Deputy President of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Honorary Life Vice-President, National Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), and President, Pan-African Organisation for Women Recognition. She was also at various times, a Director of the National Insurance Corporation of Nigeria (NICON) and Nigeria Industrial Development Bank (NIDB), now Bank of Industry (BOI). She is a member of Vision 2010 and 2020 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and was an active member of 2014 Nigerian National Conference.
Akande will also be installed in the first week of December, 2015 as the second female President in the over one hundred year history of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI).
In a statement released by the Acting Head, NBGN Secretariat, Mr. Oluwole Dosunmu stated that the organisation would benefit immensely from Akande’s wealth of experience in the Organised Private Sector and management of Membership Based Organisations (MBOs).
He disclosed that the stakeholders at the AGM would receive their organisation’s progress report, particularly the facilitation of New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) lofty objectives in the private sector. The event would also provide opportunity for the stakeholders to review the Group’s progress so far and strategise on ways to revitalise and strengthen it for effectiveness in the achievement of its mandates.
