In Lagos, Nigeria, I stumbled upon a campaign by a group of three women, Ajumoke Nwaeze, Osas Air and Lolade Fanimokun who were creating awareness against domestic violence.
Miss Ajumoke Nwaeze spoke about how the group of three, sprung up as a task to identify and spread a social responsibility message on a social vice in the society, within 48 hours. She spoke about domestic violence which encompasses battery, child abuse, sexual assault and even stalking.
She spoke of how women need to come way out when being abused as this is the only out of this menace in the society. She advised anyone abused to contact a Mirabel Centre at the Lagos State Teaching Hospital by calling 112.
While she emphasized that anyone who is raped or abused must ensure they first confide in a family member or close associate, and ensure they do not take a shower before calling the toll-free number.
She also added that even though the government is working on it, individuals need to become more aware as many are afraid of speaking out when being abused.
She assured everyone that the stat government has checks in place to protect the victims.
The young entrepreneurs and advocates collaborated with Lagos state Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team, Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and other reputable organizations in order to execute their mission effectively. They visited The University of Lagos, Yabatech, TVC, EKO FM, crowded bus stops and other places to create awareness on the fight against Domestic Violence of all forms – Battery, Child Abuse, Rape, Assault and others.
