According to the statement made by President Robert Mugabe at the 34th session of the NEPAD Heads of State and Government Orientation Committee, Addis Ababa in Ethiopia, he welcomed the president of the United Republic of Tanzania, President Dr John Magufuli who is a first time attendee of the session.
He also welcome the President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Mr Akinwunmi Adeshina, who was recently elected to the position.
He reaffirmed the critical role of the NEPAD agency as the African Union’s economic development arm. While noting that the agency has performed extremely well-looking at its achievements. He noted that the agency has been at the forefront of mobilizing resources to fund infrastructural and other developmental activities under the Comprehensive Africa Agricultural Development Programme (CAADP).
He also added that NEPAD has pioneered the introduction of the new multi-purpose technology that seeks to improve communication and adaptation to climate change and other Africa-specific challenges, using African solutions. While also highlighting another breakthrough that the agency has had, which is the development of a model law on medical products regulation that member states could use to review their existing laws especially against imported medicines whose efficacy is not known.
He observed the migration of African youths out of the continent as a serious call for concern which requires urgent attention.
He then wished everyone a wonderful deliberation at the session.
President Robert Mugabe is the Co-Chair of the NEPAD Heads of State and Government Orientation Committee and also the President of Zimbabwe.
